A severe earthquake of magnitude 5.9 hit southern part of Pakistan on Thursday, October 7, 2021. Disaster management officials confirmed the death of atleast 20 people and over 300 others injured due to powerful earthquake in Balochistan province of Pakistan. They said dead were majorly women and children, and expected to rise the death toll.
According to the National Seismic Monitoring centre in Islamabad, the region near Harnai was the epicentre of earthquake at a depth around 15 kilometres.
The earthquare severely impacted the regions in Balochistan province such as Sibi, Quetta, Zhob, Ziarat, Pishin, Chaman, Quila Saifullah. The “exact damage” has not yet been confirmed according to the officials but the worst affected area assumed to be Harnai regions. It is a remote mountainous city where paved roads are not well developed.
In Harnai, due to poor mobile coverage and electricity, rescuers faced many challenges. Rescuer used mobile flashlights and torches to rescue people. Reports said many people killed when roofs and walls collapsed after quake struck in the early hours as people slept.
Government officials said they are sending helicopters to the affected area to help the rescue operation and will impose an emergency in the hospitals to provide injured medical treatment.
