Cabinet has approved the extension of mid-day meal scheme PM POSHAN for pre-primary students. Mid-day meal scheme was launched in year 1995 in order to design school meal program to attain better nutrition and health among school going children across the country.
Now center has renamed Mid-day program as PM POSHAN (Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman) scheme and approved total budget of amount Rs 1.31 lakh crore for 5 years until 2025-26.
Cabinet committee has also introduced modification in the scheme by extending Mid-day meal program to pre-primary students who come into formal education system as per the recommendation of new National Education Policy 2020.
Minister of Education, Dharmendra Pradhan said this PM POSHAN scheme will improve nutritional status of the students while encouraging their learning to further rise the enrolments of students in government schools.
According to Ministry officials, PM POSHAN scheme aims to focus on ” holistic nutrition” goals by improving the quality standards of Mid-day meals.
They further added, 5% flexi component would be introduced into current budget allocation to incorporate additional nutrition values with fruits, milk and fortified food into the menu of Mid-day meal for the students. States will be asked to direct benefit transfer to beneficiary to reduce leakage and achieve transparency.
