Even though the concept has been around for a few decades, quantum cryptography, often referred to as quantum encryption, is nowadays becoming more critically relevant to everyday lives. Various industries across the globe are realizing the significance of this concept as it is capable of providing better protection to crucial data, unlike the currently available encryption methods. In other words, quantum cryptography uses principles of quantum mechanics to data transmission and encryption so that the data cannot be read by anyone else, other than the intended recipient.

At present, the application of quantum cryptography in many areas is conceptual, but government bodies and prominent companies across the globe are striving persistently to develop a usable quantum computer.

Increasing demand for secure and state-of-the-art solutions to protect vital data from hackers is anticipated to drive demand for quantum cryptography in the near future. In addition, rising adoption of automation and rapid digitization in various industries worldwide have surged the cases of cyberattacks, which, in turn, are likely to bolster demand for secure solutions.

The development of quantum computers is expected to create a whole new era of computing and revolutionize a wide range of industries, including healthcare, defense, automotive, retail, BFSI, and others. With advancements in these computers, the need for unhackable and cross-continental communication systems for transmitting confidential data effectively will rise in the near future.

Quantum Encryption to Strengthen Protection of Healthcare Data Networks

Though quantum technology is yet to be fully utilized in real-world applications, its usage in the healthcare sector is anticipated to bring about major changes in various aspects. One of these aspects is protecting data networks. Healthcare organizations nowadays rely more on high-performance and speedy networks to enable the flow of crucial data, such as management information and patient records. But, these networks are susceptible to cyberattacks because of lack of protection. According to HIPAA Journal, between 2009 and 2020, approximately 3,705 healthcare data breaches of more than 500 records were reported to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office for Civil Rights (OCR).

Furthermore, the industry has recently embraced big data and Internet of Things (IoT), which has propelled the need for security. The upcoming age of quantum cryptography is expected to aid the healthcare sector in encrypting its data so that it is nearly impossible for hackers to get access to sensitive information. Many renowned companies nowadays are conducting research & development activities to come up with novel security solutions equipped with quantum technology.

For instance, in November 2021, NVIDIA and Atos developed the Excellence AI Lab (EXAIL) to bring together researchers and scientists for accelerating European research, education, and computing technologies. The lab’s first project will focus on five areas, namely, hybridization with quantum computing, cybersecurity, edge AI/computer vision, healthcare and genomics, and climate change.

Private and Public Enterprises Focus on Developing Novel Methods to Eliminate Cyberattacks in Retail Sector

Retailers nowadays are striving to protect their customers against the surging threat of cybercrimes. Rapid expansion of e-commerce platforms across the globe has further resulted in increasing cases of cyberattacks as more and more people are opting for online payment options. Conventional techniques, such as SSL/TLS have proved to be vulnerable against today’s advanced attacks. In October 2020, BigBasket, a renowned grocery e-commerce platform based in India, experienced a data breach incident that could have exposed important information of more than two crore customers. Thus, the need to develop a robust technique of encryption is growing day by day. Quantum cryptography is expected to be an ideal solution to resolve these security issues faced by customers during online shopping.

In June 2021, for instance, the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) declared that it is planning to create new methods that will ease the shift to replacement algorithms that are resistant to quantum computer-based attacks from public-key cryptographic algorithms.

The Road Ahead

Even though quantum computers are still in the nascent stage of development, a few smaller ones have been created. It may take another decade to develop a fully functional quantum computer for usage in various industries. As quantum cryptography seems a long way off, many prominent companies have started creating supposedly ‘quantum-safe’ concepts.
