Widely used social media sites Whatsapp, Facebook and Instagram were shut down suddenly around 9:30 pm IST yesterday.
According to outage tracking website Downdetector.com, they received near about 10.6 million complaints by the users regarding facing trouble using messaging services from different parts of the world such as Singapore, United States, Europe, Colombia and other.
Facebook’s chief technology officer Mike Schroepfer confirmed on rival platform Twitter that it’s apps were disabled and coming back online soon. They apologized to users for hours-long blackout as many people and businesses depend on the apps all around the world. He said that teams have been working to debug and restore access of the apps as soon as possible.
It is believed to be worst blackout of the technological services since 2008. In 2019, similar blackout was happed for an hour. Facebook stated that outage happened due to change in server configuration.
After six long hours, all the apps of Facebook are eventually restored and accessible but some of the service’s problems are not resolved fully. Company thanked users for bearing with them for such long hours and cautioned the functioning of some services would take some time to stabilize.
